I have an article published in Leadership Journal’s Spring 2010 issue, titled The Dirt on Organic. Although much more can always be said, this article is my best condensed version of the highs and lows of my time spent planting organic churches, prior to moving to the Capital District. It’s also a great reflection of my love and hopes for small groups at Christ’s Church.
If you can’t get your hands on the print copy, they just released it online here.
I just read your article in CT and looked you up on the web. At first, I was miffed at what sounded like a bunch of whining. No disrespect intended, I just kept thinking, “What was the guy expecting – a church picnic?” It pained me that you would be giving more ammo to the crowd that disses all things organic – people who can’t see beyond their “institutional church noses.”
In my opinion, organic is very messy by nature. Jesus’ approach seems quite organic to me, and look at what he had to deal with (followers that didn’t get it; men with big egos; jealousy; backbiting, and constant criticism from the “religious police.”)
Outside looking in, it sounds like you were very successful! In fact, I found myself envying you. No one would necessarily welcome the kind of muck you found yourself in, but how do we get around all that stuff if we hope to reach hell raising pagans? You were in the trenches, blazing a trail, doing battle with the enemy! I commend you. You set a great example. You did what seems to me the work of a true evangelist. High fives, dude!
I felt better about what you were saying by the last few paragraphs as you offered perspective. Thanks for the honesty. I’m glad you’re not giving up!

Sorry, LJ not CT. I read both.
Mike,
Thanks for looking me up. My days with organic churches were some of the best and hardest at the same time, mainly just the best though. I appreciate your concerns, and praises, for the effort.
Hey Brian,
Besides my response to your article in LJ (which BTW they titled, I wouldn’t call it a defense, that sounds way too reactionary to my own thoughts) I decided you were right, there is some dirt in the organic church movement. I posted my thoughts on it on my own blog.

I appreciate your bringing this subject up. I also really do appreciate your spirit in what you are saying and value your experience. Thanks.
Pressing on,
Neil
Thanks Neil. Admittedly, my time was short and therefore my perspective limited. I’ve enjoyed your post on the personal blog best of the three.
